DEA RELEASES MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT EVENT SCHEDULE
CRANSTON --- Corinne Calise Russo, Director of the state Department of Elderly Affairs (DEA) has released the list of dates and sites for the 2010 Medicare Annual Open Enrollment period. During open enrollment, Medicare beneficiaries have an opportunity to review their Medicare health plans and Medicare Prescription Drug (Medicare Part D) plans. The annual open enrollment period begins on November 15 through December 31, 2010. Changes made in Medicare health insurance plans and Medicare Part D plans will become effective on January 1, 2011.
“The annual open enrollment period gives Medicare beneficiaries a chance to look at their current health care coverage and to change plans if their health insurance needs are different than they were last year,” Russo said. “Even if beneficiaries aren’t thinking about a change, open enrollment offers them an opportunity to review their plans.”
According to the latest statistics, there are more than 181,000 Medicare beneficiaries in Rhode Island. Staff and volunteers from the Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) will be on site at these enrollment events to talk with Medicare beneficiaries and counsel them on their health insurance options. Beneficiaries should bring their Medicare card, health insurance card and Medicare Part D enrollment card when they come in to see a SHIP counselor.
